Is Vaping the Same Thing as Smoking Tobacco?

Unfortunately in 2016 the FDA deemed that Vaping should be classified as a tobacco product.  Vapers don’t smoke the tar of a cigarette – the cancer causing component of tobacco which results in the death of half of all smokers and many more around them.  However they do intake nicotine if they choose a vape with nicotine content. Probably because nicotine is addictive, whether consumed by smoking a cigarette or vaping, the FDA put vaping in the same classification as tobacco.

Yet not everyone sees it this way.

Aljazeera news reports that Public Health England “is saying that vaping is safer than smoking and could lead to the demise of the traditional cigarette.”

Vaping is safer than smoking (gov.uk)

and could lead to the demise of the traditional cigarette.

In fact the United Kindom official government website gov.uk released a press release  “E-cigarettes around 95% less harmful than tobacco estimates landmark review” in which they conclude vaping is less harmful and a smart path away from tobacco products, and “there is no evidence so far that e-cigarettes are acting as a route into smoking for children or non-smokers.”

The New York State Smokers’ Quitline very clearly states that nicotine does not cause cancer:

Q: Does nicotine cause cancer?

A: No, tar in cigarette smoke causes cancer.  But, nicotine is an addictive drug. It is not the nicotine in cigarette smoke that causes cancer. Nicotine may keep you smoking, but it is the other bad chemicals in cigarettes that make smoking so dangerous.

Furthermore nicotine may even be harmless or even beneficial. A study released by Scientific American concludes: Is Nicotine All Bad? Scientists question if a daily dose of the well-known alkaloid is as benign as caffeine:

“We need to de-demonize nicotine,” said Ann McNeill, a professor of tobacco addiction and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London, who has spent her career researching ways to help people quit smoking.

Some studies show nicotine, like caffeine, can even have positive effects. It’s a stimulant, which raises the heart rate and increases the speed of sensory information processing, easing tension and sharpening the mind.

Smoking kills half of all those who do it – plus 600,000 people a year who don’t, via second-hand smoke – making it the world’s biggest preventable killer, with a predicted death toll of a billion by the end of the century, according to the World Health Organization.

Vape Juice and eLiquid manufacturers like SoCal Vape are trying to fight back, but most are relatively small companies.  Tobacco has had a devastating impact on worldwide health, and vaping offers a safer delivery of nicotine, and provides a pleasurable experience. That message is also worth hearing.
